Secret Pal 14 Questionnaire

This seems to be the same Questionnaire as SP13 but it's an excuse to have a new post so I'll try to update...

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like? I like natural fibers. I don't like acrylics and I loathe novelty stuff. I don't like itchy or mohairy or spiderweb lacey stuff. I guess natural fibers still leaves it pretty wide open, right?

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? I have a cardboard wine tube for my straights (which I almost never use anymore), a CD case thing for my circulars and the day-planner-looking-book-thingy for my KnitPicks Options. All set here!

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? My friend (and midwife) taught me to knit in Summer 2003 - I've been obsessed ever since! I guess I'm advanced.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Amazon wish list
Etsy wish list

5. What's your favorite scent? I don't use candles or home fragrance things. I love good bath stuff! I'm a big fan of light fragrance - pink grapefruit is a favorite. I like citrusy, or light floral, sandalwood is nice. Anything not too overpowering.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy? I'm still a sugar fiend! I don't like white chocolate or super-dark chocolate. Other then that, if it's sweet, I will eat.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin? I only knit. I don't spin (no desire to!). I have a dusty bin of cross-stitch stuff that I should really just get rid of as I haven't touched it since I learned to knit.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD) I'm all over the place here - blues, classic rock, country, alternative, bluegrass. I think the only thing I can't bear is techno or new age stuff - both genres grate on me as too boring and repetitive. I have an ipod. I discovered audiobooks last year and am a big fan!

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand? Another wide open venue. I'm not a fan of purple, orange or yellow but I'm not completely opposed to them either. I don't like pastels or white/cream yarn. I tend toward rich, deep tones (hues?).

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets? Husband I adore, 2 boys (8 and 6) who crack me up and a cat.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? All but ponchos.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? I don't really have a favorite thing to knit. I try it all. I found out I don't want to knit laceweight shawl things. I mostly knit things I'll wear (sweaters, socks, scarves, hats, mittens, etc.)

13. What are you knitting right now? How much time do you have? I generally have at least 15 things on needles but usually btw 3-5 active. Right now, I'm working on some socks for the Sock Summit.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts? Absolutely!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic? I'd be lost without my metal KnitPicks Options. I wish they made a set of small, sock sized Options! I'm all set with needles.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? Yes, I have both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO? 4 years?

18. What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe? My favorite holiday is Halloween. We celebrate a commercial xmas. We are not christians and I really don't want any religious stuff.

19. Is there anything that you collect? Yarn.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I just had a little fall down at the KnitPicks 40% off summer book sale! I keep meaning to get a subscription to Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting but haven't as of yet. I love the Ysolda Teague Vivian pattern. Also, I know my Rav queue is crazy long but I'm in the process of adding the WANT tag to the patterns I really crave!

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn? I'm going to try to better my Fair Isle skills this year.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements? I am!
Toe to heel - 10"; Ball of foot - 8"; Ankle (just above ankle bone)- 8.5"

23. When is your birthday? 4/13

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID? yes - 5elementknitr

Still buried in hooks, Ruth!

Cocoa Swap Questionnaire

Cocoa Swap Questionnaire:

The Yarn…

1. Do you knit, crochet, or do both? Knit, knit and knit some more. I've been known to crochet now and then but don't really prefer it.

2. What is your favorite one-skein project? What item do you find you knit the most of? Fetching. And I've recently discovered hats but have enough hat projects to last the year. Do socks count as one-skein? If the skein's big enough, right?

3. Do you like using a particular type of needle or hook? (wood, metal, straight, circular) Is there something you’ve been wanting to try, or a particular size you always seem to be short on? I have a set of Options from knitpicks and a set of DPN's from them - all set on needles!

4. What’s on your needles\hook right now? What’s your oldest UFO (unfinished object)? How much time do you have? I've got my husband's sweater, a hat for my brother, slippers for me, 3 pairs of socks, a lace shawl and a few other things on needles (did I mention I have a ton of needles? hah!). My oldest UFO is about 2 years old - this year it's either getting finished or frogged.

5. What are your favorite types of yarns? Are you allergic to any yarns, or just hate working with something? Anything type/brand of yarn you’ve been dying to try?
Not allergic to any, but I don't like acrylic. It'd be easier to say which I don't like - laceweight, anything really hairy (mohair), anything itchy. Pretty much done with felting and completely finished with novelty stuff. I've been drooling over that Malabrigo sock yarn. Anything Malabrigo, really - love those rich colors! I like to see local-to-you yarns, too.

(Where's question #6? I just cut-n-paste this from the cocoa swap blog!)

7. What are your favorite colors? Brights? Pastels? More muted colors? Variegated? Are there that make you want to stab yourself in the eye with your needles? I like jewel tones. Can't stand pastels; don't like orange, yellow or purple. My Etsy Favorites will show a lot of the colors I like!

8. What is your favorite knit accessory, your fancy needles? stitch markers? your yarn cutter? What do you have TOO many of? What do you wish you had?
I feel you can never too many tape measures, stitch markers or Chibi needles.

The Chocolate:
1. Do you prefer boxed/packets, or something homemade?
Any works for me!

2. Marshmallows or whipped cream? Whipped cream

3. Do you use any ‘add ins’? Sometimes I add a flavored, powdered creamer.

4. Are you a year round cocoa drinker or just in the winter months? Mostly winter

5. Do you like flavored cocoas or are you just a ’straight chocolate’ kind of person? I like to try different flavors but plain is always good, too!

6. Do you enjoy cocoa from restaurants or shops like Starbucks? What are some of your favorites? Yes - I've actually, only recently discovered Starbucks hot chocolate and chai lattes. Luckily only recently as that stuff's ridiculously expensive!

7. You’ve just made the perfect cup of cocoa - is it in a thick mug, or a thinner cup? Where would you sit to drink it? I have these 2 favorite mugs I use - thick and really pretty. My friend gave me the Starbucks knitted cup recently and I use that one now, too! I sit at the kitchen table where it's quietest.

8. You’re enjoying that perfect cup, what treats will you enjoy with it? Are they sweet or salty? Crunchy? Soft and flaky? Usually something sweet. Probably crunchy as I'm soft and flaky enough on my own.

It’s all YOU!
1. Do you have other hobbies like spinning or scrapbooking?
There's other hobbies?? I read a lot. I've made a resolution to read only what's on my bookshelf this year.

2. Do you collect anything? Yarn

3. What is your favorite part of Winter? The snow. Love the snow. And it's ability to make us stay snuggled up inside with movies (and knitting for me!).

4. What sort of scents do you enjoy? Any difference in what you like for your house versus what you like for your body? I don't scent my house. I have yet to find a house scent that isn't overpowering. For me, I like fresh scents. Or spicy. Citrus, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Sandalwood, any combo of those is good too.

5. Are you allergic to anything? No. I have a cat but keep him away from the bulk of my yarn. (He's around what I work on, of course!)

6. Are you on Ravelry? What’s your ID? Yes - 5elementknitr

7. How would you spend an ideal winter afternoon/day? Outside: taking the boys sledding. Inside: watching movies and knitting.

8. What’s your favorite animal? Don't really have one.

I do so love the swappy, Ruth!

Swap Swag

How 'bout we start the New Year with some yarn pron?

I'm in the Secret Pal 13 Swap. This is my first time in SP and I gotta say, I was gettin' nervous. Y'all know how I love a good swap and I've been terribly active over at Swap-bot for a little over a year now. I've been getting stiffed over at Swap-bot lately and I'm pretty much done with it. But I always hear (and see) such great things about SP swaps that I thought I'd give it a shot. My upstream partner had been communicating really well but I was starting to wonder if I had a big talker who was actually going to stiff me (happens a lot on Swap-bot).

I worry no more. I got my first package and it's so good it makes my head spin!

I got STR!

This is the Valkyrie colorway and I can't stop petting it.

There was also this fantastic sock bag...

See the skulls?

The new Yarn Harlot book and cool post card...

Some devilish, pirate ducky DPN holders...

A Fall Goodies bag from The Knitting Philistine!
That's the Philistine's notions bag, a tin of lip balm, a fantastic smelling soap and a little garden gnome - awesome!

Best. Stitch. Markers. EVER!
Sorry, but I couldn't get a shot of these unblurred. That's a treasure chest, a hello kitty pirate, a jolly roger flag and a wee dagger.
How great is this package???!!!
Then some friends and I did a little swappy between us and Sam drew my name.
She put everything in this cardboard wine tube (great for holding your average length straight needles!)...
You should see all the stuff she crammed in there!
Closeups:
Fantastic little robot notions bag.

Beautiful tiny stitch markers!

I adore this address book she included! I love old movies with a passion I can't begin to describe. Each letter of the alphabet has a replica of a movie poster and on the other side of the movie poster page is the description of the movie (some are pretty funny without meaning to be - hah!). So cool!

And, of course, there was yarn! Sparkly, sparkly, yarn mmmmm.....

Persuasion from Tempted Yarns
(There may have also been some chocolates but they were devoured so quickly, I can hardly remember...)

Hope my year goes as well as the last one ended, Ruth!
P. S. Hope your new year goes well too!
P.P.S. Here's a couple more for you (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

SP13 Questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I've become a bit of a fiber snob over the years and only like natural fibers. I've been in yarn swaps where my upstream partner said they only have access to the big craft stores and I've replied, "Really? Because you're online and there's tons of stuff online!" (What a snot I am, right? In real life, I was a bit more diplomatic.) I don't care for mohair or anything scratchy. I don't need any felting stuff.

Also, not likin' the cobweb yarn. I've got 3 or 4 skeins of the stuff and I just don't like working with it. I love lace knitting but only if it's in a weight of 28sts = 4" or more! I don't really have any use for wraps/stoles but I like lace knitting in socks, sweaters, scarves, etc. Know what I mean?

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a cardboard wine tube ($2 at Michael's!) that I store my old bamboo straights in, a fabric needle roll for some of my DPN's, and my other DPN's kind of roll around in a plastic bin full of knitting notions. I have a set of KnitPicks options (metal) in their little "book" thingy, a set of KnitPicks metal DPN's (US 0-3) in the case they came in and a ton of addi turbos in a Brown Sheep Company holder that makes me think of a CD case.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I learned in the summer of 2003 and my friend taught me. She's a midwife and I'm forever grateful! I feel I'm pretty advanced.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Etsy wish list
Amazon wish list

5. What's your favorite scent?

I like fresh, citrusy stuff. Grapefruit - love grapefruit! I don't burn candles but I love soap and body stuff.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I'm a fiend for sugar. Chocolate Riesen - well, chocolate anything really! I also love to try homemade sweets (cookies, sweet bread, whatever). And jam, love interesting jams.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I don't spin. I used to cross-stitch but I've got a huge, dusty, ignored bin of that stuff. I only knit now.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I'm pretty much wide open here. I've got everything from country to rock to classic rock, blues (love the blues), alternative, some classical. I have an iPod.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?

Again, pretty much wide open. I prefer dark and jewel tones. I don't like pastels, and I'm not a fan of yellow, orange or purple.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

One husband (for now - jk!), 2 little guys (7 and 5) and a cat.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

All except ponchos.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Again, I'm all over the place here. Socks, scarves, mitts, hats, sweaters, wraps. I don't do blankets and I don't do too many wraps.

13. What are you knitting right now?

How much time do you have? I'm almost done with a Pimlico Shrug. I've got 2 sweaters on neeldes (one for me, one for my husband), btw 3-5 socks, an Icarus (in waiting), a shrug I'm designing and don't even get me started on the WIP's in the Closet of No Return. I'm planning to start some serious Xmas knitting (3 hats, one bath mat, 4 pairs of slippers).

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

yes!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

I'm pretty well set for needles. I prefer metal circulars and am completely addicted to my KnitPicks Options. That being said, I wouldn't mind trying some of their Harmony tips for my set! And I can always use a couple of extra cables (I use mostly the 32"ers) as I'm addicted to knitting but not as addicted to finishing anything as I out to be.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

yes, both

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

I'd have to dig through the Closet of No Return but the one that jumps off the top of my head is about 2 years old. There's probably some older then that stuffed away in there, though.

18. What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

We are NOT religious but we do Christmasy stuff. My favorite holiday is Halloween and my birthday (which I'm hoping the new president will make a national holiday).

19. Is there anything that you collect?

Hand-dyed sock yarn. Well, yarn in general.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I have no Wollmeise or STR. The STR I've been eyeing - Nodding Violet and Typhoon Tina, anything from the Raven Clan - any weight!

Oooh and Malabrigo! Malabrigo anything (but laceweight) and I've heard/seen around the web that new Malabrigo sock yarn. *drool*

I don't have subscriptions to the only mags I read - Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits. I used to just use the 40% off coupons from the Sunday paper but recently, they stopped letting you use them on books/mags - drat!

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

Not that I can think of.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

I like to think I am! Despite some 30 skeins of sock yarn (and so many sock WIP's), I have yet to finish one! Still collecting...

toe to heel - 10"; arch circumference - 9"; base of the toes/pad of the foot circumference - 8"; ankle - 9.5"
I wear a US 8.5 or 9 shoe. Surprisingly big feet for someone of my stature (5'2").

23. When is your birthday?

4/13/70

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?

5elementknitr

I'm adding my own questions here:

25. Are you in any Sock of the Month clubs?

I'm in Scout Swag and the Nefarious Yarn Clubs.

26. Anything else?

I have a cat and I keep it away from my yarn. Obviously, it doesn't live in a big hamster ball and is near things I'm actually working on but any other yarn is safely sequestered in bins behind the closed door to the basement.

I loathe anything smoky. Cigarette smoke, smoked meat, smoked cheese - barf!

I'd love to see what you have around your area. Whether it's edible or yarnible things, I love local stuff!

Forever addicted to swaps, Ruth!

Swap Jackpot!

Y'all know how I love to swap. Lately, I've been getting shorted or flat out stiffed! It's been kind of a bummer.

I joined YarnThing's swap on Ravelry and this time I got a stellar swap partner! Look at all these goodies.....

The sock pattern (Francie) was in my Ravelry queue, my partner asked what books I've been wanting and sent me one I told her about (Anticraft! Go check it out - it's so cool!), a jar of blueberry jam and a Citrus Basil soy candle from Etsy, gorgeous stitch markers in chocolate brown and blue, a cell phone charm she made,

and this....

That's yarn she handspun and it's beautiful beyond belief! It's spun from a Wooly Treasures batt in the Surf and Sand colorway and the fibers are BFL, alpaca, bamboo, and silk. I can't stop touching it!

Here's a closeup of the stitch markers and cell phone charm. The charm has, well, charms on it and one says I (heart) 2 Knit and the one below it is a sheep. So cute! (I asked if she had an Etsy store and she said no but she sells these at some of the LYS's around Colorado.)

Thanks so much CreativeProcess!

Then in another swap for green yarn, my partner sent this lovely Indigo Moon. Score!

Thanks Lalchee of Swapbot! I'm so jealous that Indigo Moon is a local dyer for you - lucky!

This next stuff isn't from a swap but from a yarn club that I'm in. It's theme is Nefarious people in history and it's creator is Cosmic Fibers. (I showed you the Lizzie Borden yarn from the last send out.) This is a lovely merino/silk/nylon blend with a thrilling bit of silvery sparkle running throughout. May I introduce you to.... Sweeney Todd!

My crappy pictures don't do them justice, Ruth!

Etsy Junkie

I started a new swap on Swap-bot.com

I'm as addicted to Etsy as I am to knitting/blogging/reading blogs/swap-bot.

Anyway....

My new swap is called "I Love Etsy" and you can sign up here.

If you don't know Etsy... well, if you're a knitter and read blogs and don't know about it, I'd be shocked.

Go to Etsy and discover your newest time-suck. But, man, what a way to go!

Loving the Etsy, Ruth!
